Abstract

Background The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic risk factors that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease in Thai women. Promoting proper self-management for Thai women with metabolic syndrome is necessary.

Objective The objectives of this clinical trial were to examine the effects of a Self-management program on body mass index, waist circumference, cardiovascular risk, and regression of metabolic syndrome among these people.

Methods and Results A total of 80 Thai women with metabolic syndrome at out-patient department in a community hospital, and two health promoting hospitals were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The experimental group received a Self-management program. Task-specific self-efficacy was fostered through goal setting, action and monitoring progress, and making adjustment to attain the goals vie a small group education session for weight loss, self-management training session for diet control and brisk walking, and two phone visits. The control group received the usual nursing care and the same medical treatment as the experimental group. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic, Chi-square, T-test, Paired t-test, and ANCOVA. Finding indicated that at 12 weeks after enrollment, the experimental group demonstrated a significant lower body mass index, waist circumference, and cardiovascular risk, and showed a significant higher regression of metabolic syndrome than baseline and the control group.

Conclusions The results highlight the benefits of Self-management program in decreasing obesity, and cardiovascular risk among people with metabolic syndrome, and increasing regression of metabolic syndrome. Further research is needed to replicate in a longer time frame.
